Valley of the Thoré
La Vallée du Thoré en français
The Upper Valley of the Thoré is a gateway to the Natural Regional Park of Upper du Languedoc, lying between the Montagne Noire and the very last traces of the Cévennes. A green belt linking the neighbouring cities (Toulouse, Montpellier), it looks out towards both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. It is a region of freshwater springs and running water, of freshness and foliage, of streams and waterfalls...the secret of its verdant landscape! The mountain-lakes are close at hand, with convenient roads leading up to them. It is just an hour's drive to Carcassonne, to Albi or to the sun and sea of the Mediterranean beaches.

For the holiday-maker, a whole range of activities is on offer: walks (the GR7 and a dozen or more signposted routes) cycle-routes, "piste verte", botanical tours, horse-riding, fishing and mushroom-picking...

Take the time to revisit the history of the region: its megalithic heritage (dolmens, menhirs, graven stones..), to rediscover the trail of the Gentilhommes Verriers (journeymen glassmakers) and the ovens where the glass was blown and turned and, closer to modern times, to find out more about one of Napoleon's Marshalls, Jean de Dieu Soult, to say nothing of the region's many chateaux.....

LABASTIDE-ROUAIROUX, LACABAREDE, ALBINE, SAINT-AMANS SOULT ET VALTORET.

LE CHATEAU DE SOULT-BERG was built in 1827. Home of Jean de Dieu Soult, Duc de Dalmatie, Maréchal Général de France (born 1769). A guided tour takes you through rooms that still preserve the original décor, the chateau providing a good example of the diversity of styles that characterised the early nineteenth century.

THE ECOMUSÉE DE LA MONTAGNE NOIRE ET VALLÉE DU THORÉ

The Écomusée preserves the memory of the traditional skills of the region (stone, wool, leather, glass, wood) and provdes an account of the history of the textile-industry in the Midi-Pÿrénnées from the nineteenth century to the present day.
