The Upper Valley
of the Thoré is a gateway to the Natural Regional Park of Upper du Languedoc,
lying between the Montagne Noire and the very last traces of the Cévennes. A green belt linking the
neighbouring cities (Toulouse, Montpellier), it looks out towards both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
It is a region of freshwater springs and running water, of freshness and foliage, of streams and
waterfalls...the secret of its verdant landscape! The mountain-lakes are close at hand, with convenient

of activities is on offer: walks (the GR7 and a dozen or more signposted routes)
cycle-routes, "piste verte", botanical tours, horse-riding, fishing and mushroom-picking...
Take the time to revisit the history of the region: its megalithic heritage (dolmens,
menhirs, graven stones..), to rediscover the trail of the Gentilhommes Verriers
(journeymen glassmakers) and the ovens where the glass was blown and turned and,
closer to modern times, to find out more about one of Napoleon's Marshalls, Jean
de Dieu Soult, to say nothing of the region's many chateaux.....
LABASTIDE-ROUAIROUX, LACABAREDE, ALBINE, SAINT-AMANS SOULT
LE CHATEAU DE SOULT-BERG was built in 1827. Home of Jean de Dieu Soult, Duc de Dalmatie,
Maréchal Général de France (born 1769). A guided tour takes you through rooms that still
preserve the original décor, the chateau providing a good example of the diversity
of styles that characterised the early nineteenth century.
